Achieving Accessibility: 10 Things We Can Learn From Mountaineering

Speaker: Wiep Hamstra

Accessibility isn’t only about serving the needs of users with disabilities, it’s also crucial for increasing conversion and ensuring the best possible user experience for all online visitors. That’s why it is essential for governments to have accessible websites. But in the Netherlands, only a very small percentage of government websites are accessible at the minimum level.

There is pressure on many organisations to achieve greater accessibility, and we can all agree on the benefits. So what makes it so hard to attain? Why is accessibility often overlooked in web projects and in the maintenance after launch? In this session, we’ll compare the hard work with mountaineering, which involves similar focus, planning, training, teamwork, and flexibility to change plans.
